Blast From The Past: The Hobbit

As a kid I went into various modes of incessantly watching various movies continuously until I moved onto to the next movie to watch over and over again to my utter enjoyment. Usually this would last between a month or two months, though I did watch Labyrinth every day for the better half of about 6 months (which would explain my early love of David Bowie along with my fear of bogs).

Well a couple days ago I was minding my own business derping around online when I stumbled across a clip from the 1977 Rankin/ Bass cartoon version of The Hobbit and suddenly a wave of nostalgia showered over me so hard that it seriously was like getting punched in the face by my childhood. You see as a kid I had a brief infatuation with said cartoon. For one glorious month my folks would get either the Disney channel or HBO for free and this is where I first saw The Hobbit. Eventually I convinced my Dad to tape it, so my 8 or 9 year old self could watch it when our "special offer" expired. In a way I was like Gollum pining after the ring for a month or two. Then I found out that it was a book that I could get at my school library and I spent my entire year of 5th grade checking it out and pouring over the giant green hardcover tome. Instead of the random Boxcar Children, Encyclopedia Brown and Hardy Boys that I usually checked out, it suddenly felt like I had graduated to finally reading an adult book.

And all because of a simple cartoon that I had watched obsessively...

Anyway I hadn't thought about it in a long time, but as soon as I saw that short clip it all came flooding back to me: riding in the barrels down the river, sneaking into Smaug's lair, Gollum in the cave, the goblins singing. Some kind soul was awesome enough to post the entire thing which you can see up top...and seriously made my day!
