Best Of 2011

Yeah, yeah I'm a tad late cobbling this list together. I personally blame my incessant playing of the game up top. However without further ado here is a list of some of things I enjoyed over the last year. Feel free to let me know what some of your favorites were in the comments if ya want...

Movies:

Drive- Out of the smattering of films that I saw this year, I gotta admit this one took me by surprise. It's slow burn of a plot that ultimately makes the violence that much more explosive and shocking when it occurs. Drive is like a weird hybrid of European art house film, 70's grindhouse movie and film noir with an 80's soundtrack. If all that sounds weird to you, trust me it is! However it was still on my mind long after the credits rolled

The Muppets- I'll admit it, I'm a sucker for pretty much anything Muppets and this was one movie I was pretty excited for in 2011. Sure it may have had a silly plot and corny jokes, but to me it perfectly captured that cheesy feel good Muppet vibe.

Books:

That Is All-John Hodegman- Just got this for Christmas and am already halfway done with it. That Is All is end of his Trilogy of books where he humorously makes up facts. So if you ever wanted a book that explains Wine, Sports, Being a deranged millionaire and what to do when the ancient and unspeakable ones bring Ragnarok upon all of humanity...then this is probably the book for you.

TV:

Game of Thrones- Let me just admit now that I had no idea what Game of Thrones was when I began to watch it. All I knew was that it looked Lords of the Ringish and HBO usually does a great job with story and character development. So consider myself amazed when watching the twists and turns each week only to be left stunned by the season finale. I was so impressed that I read the first four books this summer and you better believe I'm counting down until season 2.

Louie- In a single half hour of Louie comic Louis C.K. can make you laugh, cringe and even think. While the first season was pretty awesome season 2 showed a comedian who wasn't trying to pander to his audience and in the process made a show that can be both complex and utterly juvenile at the same time.

Music:

Rome-Daniele Luppi & Danger Mouse- I was pretty underwhelmed by a lot of what came out this year to tell you the truth. However listening to producer Danger Mouse and composer Daniele Luppi's attempt at recreating music that you would find in spaghetti westerns (they even used many musicians who worked on Sergio Leone films) is interesting moving between somber and beauty in a single track. The inclusion of Jack White and Norah Jones only adds to the ambiance that they've created.

Video Games:

Skyrim- As I've mentioned above for the past two weeks or so I've been playing Skyrim and I feel like I haven't even broken the surface after 8 hours or so. So far I'm a werewolf, have killed a handful of dragons, got my ass beat down by some trolls and witnessed an all out random fight between some mammoths, a giant and a dragon. If you're still questioning the awesomeness go ahead and read the end of that last sentence again. In fact if my posting starts slipping this new year just go ahead and blame Skyrim...
